Why didn't they use different nba players for team usa at the world championships?

Most of the players like elton brand and carmelo anthony were the same inexperienced players who lost in the previous world championships and olympics. Dwayne Wade is the only player who has won big games and along with james is a true superstar. The rest were all borderline stars who had their stats inflated by the new nba rules favoring more offense. They also made the same mistakes in not having shooters or defenders on the roster. I'm not saying they would have won, but why wouldn't they at least not make the same mistakes. This team, as flawed as it was, actually could have won if it weren't for a temporary lapse in their lone loss, since they did dominate some good teams.

As you know, back in the day, guys played for the love of the game. And, they had a fire to elevate for the purpose of excellence. Today, the players make astronomical salaries and, some franchises have contracts that dissuade players from stepping up internationally.

In addition, Magic Johnson said, when he was a kid, he'd choose the guys that wanted to win most. So, superstars are great, but, as you said, the shooters and hustlers make the mix work. And, international players want to show-case themselves to NBA clubs to hopefully make the big$$$$

Your right, more thought ought to go into the selection. And, more preparation time to "gel as a team" is an absolute must!

Many of the answers had merit. However, I was surprised to see how many suggested "stacking the deck with stars"? A close friend used to say "too many chefs spoil the broth." The trick is to find stars that can manage their ego's, it's possible but not plausible.

money--- or no interest in representing the US.

COach K%26lt; picked them too... he cant coach NBA.
Some people were hurt, like Kobe. Another people were gone for personal reasons, like Gilbert Arenas who had a newborn baby. Iverson was never invited, I don't know why, I guess 30 pts/season just ins't good enough. Shaq is old. All you really have to do is add Kobe, who will provide that veteran leadership who also happens to be at the top of his game, and they should win gold at the Olympics.
I think they made the mistake of taking the most talented players that were at the tryouts instead of taking guys that may have been less talented but better suited for the FIBA style of play. Then, they didn't even invite some guys that probably could have helped. They should have taken a few guys that make a living playing international ball. The guy the Raptors just signed, Anthony Parker, was an MVP over there. I think he might know a thing or two about international ball. I hear that Scoonie Penn is a very successful point guard over there. When you put a bunch of NBA players together and let them scrimmage against one another, they are naturally going to play the way they know how to play. When that happens, the guys that are stars in the league are going to look good. You take those same guys and put them up against FIBA teams and they don't look so hot anymore. They tryouts need to be adjusted.
The USA team that just played didn't have much firepower compared to the 92 team. How people thought they would dominate when the names not playing included Bryant, Iverson, Shaq, Duncan, Garnett, Kidd, Carter, and Mc Grady is beyond me. Now compare the roster to the 92 Team that had Jordan, Magic, Bird, Malone, Robinson, Ewing, Stockton, and Barkley. Apparently someone realized at that point in time that you had to send the best of the best to dominate because the rest of the World isn't that bad. They had the opportunity to assemble the greatest USA Team ever but it just didn't happen. Just imagine

Shaq

Garnett

James

Bryant

Iverson

Kidd

Duncan

Marion

Wade

Carter

McGrady

Rasheed Wallace

This Team lost for the same reason the other Teams lost because they didn't stack the Team with enough fire power. Anyone with half a brain can tell you best players are Kobe-3 Rings/Dunk Champion/81 points, Shaq 4-Rings, Iverson-MVP-Finals with no help/2nd highest scoring average ever, Duncan-2 Rings one of the most dominant ever. Carter-Best dunker ever, Kidd-2 trips to the Finals. All I'm saying is those are proven winners I'm sorry those guys the best.

Now that looks a little more like a Dream Team that is close to the 92 Team to me but I'm no Einstein!
because i would rather have an experienced veteran like elton brand rather than some old wash up like alonzo mourning
The whole essence of this team, was to put the best team possible through 2008. There will not be another round of tryouts, and the commitment by these players is through the 2008 olympics.

Having a young core, who gets to play together now, and will only improve over the next two years before the olympics will make them a team to wreckon with.

I still think that if they didn't have a few key injuries to guys who would have been starters (Kobe Bryant, Michael Redd, and Gilbert Arenas), they would have won. They got killed by not hitting outside shots against Greece. These guys would have done that.

In my opinion they beat the best team in the tournament - Argentina, and they beat them handily.

Also, you mentioned Jordan and company. Make no mistake, there isn't a player today that is as good as Jordan, Bird, or Magic. Lebron might get there one day, but he's still young and has a lot to learn.
