You can look at any championship team and its because of their defense that they win.

a recent team that isn't known particulary for great defense is the Miami Heat. In 2006, they wouldn't have won if it wasnt for Alonzo Mourning coming off the bench and playing great interior D.

This is why the Phoenix Suns will never win a championship with Nash unless they have make a 180 turn on defense, unlike Dirk and the Mavs who are much more focused on defense (while still maintaing a superb offense) ever since Avery Johnson became coach.

maybe not only the lack of defense from themselves but from the team as a whole. you list a lot of good individual defenders in wallace, rodman, jordan, duncan etc...but also, those teams those guys were on were great defensive teams.

so its not just nash and dirk, its their entire team that doesnt play great defense.

thats why the spurs have won 4 of the last 8 titles, they are a great defensive TEAM, not just duncan, but bowen, horry, ginobili drawing flops, parker beating the opposing guy to the spot.

Defense is a big component of championships but I don't think you can credit Nash or Dirk as a single person for not winning-- Their teams aren't great defensively along with themsleves
It's not Nash's fault it's the Suns management. They refuse to make any changes to the lineup which is causing the Suns to stay competitive but not going anywhere else.

If the Suns were serious about winning, they would trade for a Center that can rebound and play defense, even if it means giving up Stoudemire or Marion.
